monstrous love

At first he was really sweet and kind . . .

An autobiographical performance about one woman’s journey of surviving domestic violence. Highlighting the psychological abuse that accompanies domestic violence, the performance traces the abuse from small, easy to dismiss incidents through a gradual escalation that traps both partners in a destructive cycle. Haunted by centuries of male violence against women, the play fuses a collage of early modern texts with a first-hand account of domestic abuse. This is a story of survival in which leaving is just the first step.

In collaboration with Vitality Theatre Company, alongside this performance we ran workshops with female survivors of Domestic Abuse. The theme was celebrating moving forward and being a survivor. The workshop resulted in a 20 minute multi-media presentation that was presented at Exeter Women’s Aid AGM.
